Professional Skills Tests

All potential applicants are required to pass the QTS skills tests in numeracy and literacy before they can commence a programme of teacher training.

The numeracy and literacy skills tests:

  • cover the core skills that teachers need to fulfil their professional role in schools, rather than the subject knowledge required for teaching. This is to ensure all teachers are competent in numeracy and literacy, regardless of their specialism
  • do not replace the GCSE grade C equivalence entry requirements
  • are set in the context of the professional role of a teacher; all questions use real data and information which teachers are likely to encounter
  • are computerised and can be taken at any of approximately 150 test centres throughout the UK.

We require all successful applicants to have passed their skills tests before they can be put forward to their proposed placement schools, so it is recommended that you get these underway as soon as you have made your application for teacher training.

Passing the Skills Test

You have to pass the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy before you begin your teacher training. It is highly recommended that you familiarise yourself with the revision materials and practice tests that are available on the DfE website.

As of February 2018, changes were made the arrangements for taking the skills tests.

  • Candidates will have unlimited attempts to achieve a test pass prior the commencement of the course.
  • All candidates will be able to book 3 tests per subject, free of charge. A charge however will be applied from the fourth test attempt per subject.

(The 2-year lockout period that previously applied has been removed and any candidate who found themselves in this position may now go ahead and re-book tests for either or both subjects.)
