Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship with QTS

The Post-Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship was launched in September 2018 and offers a salaried route into teaching.  Apprentice teachers will have to meet the same statutory requirements for entry as all other ITT programmes and will be assessed against the Teachers’ Standards.

The Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is a school-based initial teacher training route leading to Qualified Teacher Status. The course specialises in ages 5-11 (General Primary).

Anyone who wants to be a primary school teacher and already has a degree. By and large, you’ll be employed by a school that you’re already working at or have an existing relationship with, but there may be a few limited opportunities for teaching assistants with extensive classroom experience to be paired with a school looking for an apprentice.

Full time for just over a year. The course starts in September with QTS being awarded in the summer term in line with our other QTS programme; apprentices will also complete an end point assessment (EPA) during the Autumn Term, to consolidate learning from their initial teacher training programme.

The Apprenticeship route leading to QTS costs £9,000 and this fee is paid by the employing school from the apprenticeship levy.

There is an option to undertake a PGCE at the same time, in conjunction with Birmingham City University, which costs £1105 – this fee is paid by the apprentice (but only after discussion at interview as to viability).

As apprentices are on a paid route to QTS, they do NOT have any further recourse to Student Loan funding, neither tuition fees nor maintenance loans.

There is no DfE funding towards the cost of the Postgraduate Teaching Apprentice’s full-time unqualified teacher’s salary, but employers that pay the apprenticeship levy can use up to £9,000 from their apprenticeship service account to cover the cost of the course. If you are non - levy paying school or if you have insufficient  funds in your apprenticeship service account, you are eligible to get funding through government-employer-investment.  The government will pay 90% of the training costs and the school will pay 10%.

  • A UK Honours Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • GCSEs/O levels in English, Mathematics and a Science subject at Grade 4 or above (Grade C prior to 2017). Equivalency Testing Agency Qualifications are not acceptable for the apprenticeship route. However, there are other qualifications that the ESFA do deem suitable. If you do not have a UK GCSE in English or Maths, please contact us first to discuss what is acceptable.
  • It is important that you understand that the apprenticeship route has whole class teaching expectations inherent with it from the outset, so is, by and large, only offered where an applicant is deemed at interview to be suitable for fulfilling this role.

Applications are made through DfE Apply.
